Public Comment Period

Environmental Assessments (EAs) and Environmental Reviews(ERs) have become an important planning and development tool for the Tribe because of increased development on the reservation. The format and structure for conducting EAs and ERs parallel that of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and are tailored to the uniqueness of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and Mohawk Culture.

The following project is available for public comments from January 31st to March 2nd, 2017.

Á:se Tsi Tewá:ton Program Announces Funding Opportunities
The Á:se Tsi Tewá:ton is seeking applications for cultural restoration projects from Akwesasnebased organizations whose work pertains to activities such as hunting, trapping, horticulture, traditional foods, medicine plants, healing, fishing, river use, basketmaking and Mohawk language. Brownfields Project Inventorying Petroleum Sites
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) Environment Division’s Brownfields Project received a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to inventory, investigate, and prioritize petroleum sites in Akwesasne for future cleanup efforts. The Tribe is one of 240 recipients across the country to receive the funding and just one of six in New York State.

Hogansburg Dam Removal
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is restoring the natural flow of the St. Regis River, improving fish habitat, and reclaiming tribal lands.

The Akwesasne Cultural Restoration Program hosted their second annual Á:se Tsi Tewá:ton Experience on October 3-4, 2015 where they had interactive displays, hands on workshops and presentations of traditional practices including the Kanie’keha language.

Spotted Lantern Fly Emerging Invasive Species 2016
Forestry Resources
There are new emerging Invasive species that could threaten the North Country where we live. The three invasive species are identified as the Spotted Lanternfly or Lycorma Delicatula, the Crazy Worm or Amynthas Agrestis and the Aquatic plant called Hydrilla or Hydrilla Verticillata (AKA - water thyme).
