Hazardous Materials Flow
by Les Benedict
Environment Division - St. Regis Mohawk Tribe

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Environment Division is taking measures to develop it's capabilities in responding to hazardous materials transportation spills.

Through a grant from the United States Department of Transportation, Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (USDOT-HMEP) Program, the Tribe will study hazardous materials flow through the Reservation.

The study will determine what types of materials are going through the reservation, what quantities are involved, and what potential risk there is to the community. Additionally, the study will determine the characteristics of hazardous materials at fixed sites on the reservation and within a 25 mile radius.

The Tribe's Environmental Response Team will utilize this information to determine their readiness for a spill and how to improve the team's response capabilities.

The results of the study will become the basis for a Tribal Emergency Response Plan, which the Tribe will use in managing hazardous materials transportation spills.
